Repo Romans

We have now had a couple of games of Mid Republican Romans against Carthaginians and are enjoying the game a lot. Now we have played a game or two we are looking at the lists and creating various options and have a question on the Mid Republican Romans.

Specifically, are the legion unit sizes set, or can you play around with them? Not with the number of bases, and minima and maxima, but with how you form units?

For example: they way we are reading it you can create the following:

4 Hastati/Principes, 4 Hastati/Principes, 2 Triarii (meets the 1 Triarii for each 4 Hastati/Principes criteria)
8 Hastati/Principes, 8 Hastati/Principes, 4 Triarii (meets the 1 Triarii for each 4 Hastati/Principes criteria)

However, could you do the following:

6 Hastati/Principes, 6 Hastati/Principes, 6 Hastati/Principes, 6 Hastati/Principes, 6 Triarii (meets the 1 Triarii for each 4 Hastati/Principes criteria)

Separately, do all the units have to be the same "scale"? i.e. could I create one Legion on a 4/4/2 basis and another on a 8/8/4 basis?

Cheers,

Edward

Hi
Lists give max BG size for Triarii as 4 - so the 6,6,6,6,6 option would not conform to the lists.

Might look good though 8)

There's no specific rule that stops you doing it. Logic says they should be the same, but we'll leave it up to you and your conscience.

Logic says no such thing. There is no reason why all legiones would be the same strength, a lot would depend on how long they had been in the field for example - i.e. how much chance they had of accumulating casulaties either through natural or battle causes.

The question was:
do all the units have to be the same "scale"?
It's quite a different thing to say: this BG or 4 bases represents 2 cohorts, but this one of 8 bases represents 4 cohorts - nothing wrong with that.
But to say this BG of 4 bases represents 1000 men, and this BG of 8 bases represents 1000men would be quite wrong.

Fair point Mr Shaw :)

However, to get what the questioner wanted you just say one legio is nearer full strength than the other 8)
