Why only protestants?

Why can you only play as the protestants in the Thirty Years War scenarios? That's a weird choice, in the other two campaigns you get to play on both sides on the different scenarios.

Also, what is the reason behind the design choice of allowing people to play only on one side in historical scenarios?

Mainly because the Catholic side is advantaged in all of the chosen scenarios - see further comments below. You can of course play both sides in the MP versions of the scenarios, with victory conditions adjusted to account for the Catholic advantage. You can also play the Catholics in SP and MP skirmishes.

Essentially that is how the engine works. To allow both sides to be played you have to create two separate scenarios, one from each side. As most of the historical battles are chosen because the usual player side starts at a disadvantage (often very significant), those particular historical scenarios wouldn't be much of a challenge the other way round, so we did not create reversed versions.

If anyone wants to create reversed scenarios, or other scenarios with the player as the Catholic side, they can do so using the scenario editor. If they link them on the board, and they are good, we will add them as officially recommended downloadable community scenarios.
