I've downloaded directX 9.0c from microsoft and the game refuses to recognize it before I start up and it doesn't let me get past the intro before it gets interrupted.

What version of the game do you have (or is it the demo?). If you have XP you should check the sticky at the top of this forum to see if that can help you get around the problem.

I'm running the demo on XP, service pack 1. I have reinstalled both directx 9.0c and the demo and it doesn't help

What is the problem you are seeing? How do you know the demo is failing to recognise DX9.0c? Are you seeing an error mesage or does it just not work in game?

It may be that Microsofts problem with installing DX is not limited to Service Pack 2 :(

I'm getting an error message before the intro runs that says: Cannot verify DirectX 9.0c. This application requires DirectX 9.0c or better to be installed, then it plays the introafter which I get an error message saying Arena.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. That second error is very non-specific about the problem, but I assume it's exactly what the first error report was saying, that for some reason it couldn't verify DirectX 9.0c

Can you run dxdiag (go to Start->Run and just type in dxdiag). On the first page the DirectX version is at the bottom of the page. E.g. (4.09.0000.0904).

What does your system report?

Alright, it says I have 9.0b, so I'll try the fix in the sticky above and see if it works, but I suppose this means that the directx problem isn't limited to service pack 2
