Hi,

We had 5 people play FoG today at OrcCon in Los Angeles.

Hannibal and 1200 pts. of Carthaginians versus Scipio's 1200 pts. of Romans. (Table was 4.5' by 12'.)

(2 new players showed up, bringing the total number of interested Los Angeles gamers to 18! Wahooooo. By the way, every available copy of Field of Glory in the dealer's room sold out on Saturday!!!!!!!!! I received my rules from England. Beautiful. Well written. Great cheat sheets. Of course, I enlarged the cheat sheets by 20% for those of us who wear glasses to read. Lol.)

The Carthaginians decided on a left hook, while refusing their right flank. The veteran Gauls were given the task of refusing the right. (Hoping that being drilled would help them in this endeavor.)

The Carthaginian right consisted of 2 elephant units and a powerful cavalry force.

The Romans on the other hand decided on a left hook with a somewhat refused right. (How often have you seen both armies with a similar plan?)

The Roman left outnumbered the Carthaginian right. In addition the Roman left contained a legion of veteran Roman infantry. (Legion being four units of 4 base battle groups of Principes/Hastati and one unit of 4 base triarii.)

2 units of velites did some very effective skirmishing in the center for the Romans.

The Carthaginian center came in to contact with the Roman center. After a hard fought battle the Carthaginian African spearmen beat their legionary counterparts. (Didn't hurt that the spearmen outnumbered the Romans in this melee. (This still left other Hastati and Triarii in the center.)

At the same time as the spearmen and legionaries were fighting, the Carthaginian's numbers on the right were starting to tell.

A unit of veteran Gauls were routed when they were hit by Gallic MF from 2 directions at once. At the same time, the veteran Roman legion in the Roman left was marching in to the gap between the Carthaginian center and right.

The Carthaginian attack on the right took a while to develop. The elephants didn't really get in to play. (A total bummer, since I had made special rules and painted incendiary pigs for the heck of it. Yes I know, they're not in the game, but I had fun.)

All in all a close fought game, with the Romans gaining the upper hand, but not by much.

I'll be at Cold Wars for the FoG tournament.

Next game will probably be at the HMGS Pacific con in the beginning of April. http://hmgspsw.org

Regards,
Bob
