I tried but the game would not enter the combat phase and would kick me out. I had to wait until after the last battle to see a final level and he was 186.

Used the highest level of difficulty and only had two other units. Made the legate work for his money and whenever he did not need to live at the end he rarely did.

Sounds pretty tough to me

It may be you have found a bug, well spotted! It's unlikely we'll do a patch to fix this as it's such a rare issue and the game is so old now.

No point to upgrade past level 101, at level 100 you get a bunch of free upgrades to kit. Took a screen capture but it won't let me upload it.

Right, that's because the original design never envisioned anyone advancing past L50 or so, and L99 or L100 was used as a "they never get this skill/equipment" option.

If you look at Squads.txt you'll see what I mean.

I think I got an idea about my new try of "Romans" campaign.
*scratches his head*

I had experienced the same problem with my legate and figured out that when upgrading him, don't get the individual stars which give strength in square, wedge and so on and especially the very first one on the list. Once finished you can upgrade all you like. I have made it to 220.
