My LGS has a large number of historic minature players(12+) that play on a regular basis. We play alot of WWII, some American civil war, Zulu Wars and the ocassional foray into Pike and Shot rules, and only about 3 of us have DBA/DBM experience. We are stepping into Ancients for the first time and have collectivley decided we are going to give FoG a shot and we are using Storm of Arrows as the first period we are going to try.

A couple of questions have come up on the starter armies and would like some clarification on them-please keep in mind that most of our collected military knowledge is post Spanish Civil War and most of us know very little on anything pre 1600's

We are loking at trying the system out with the starter armies and work our way up from there.

1) 100 years war English (Britan)-no starter army for this list that we could see-should we substitute the Continental version for them?

2)War of the Roses English-no starter army for this as well, and ideas?

A couple of ideas.

The starter armies are effectively 600 point forces.

So for 100YW Britain you could use similar proportions to the 100YW continental starter army but you will find some differences - for example in Britain only 2 of the 3 dismounted knight BGs could be drilled and the the 2 BGs of 6 archers would be undrilled - the spare 16 points (I think) could give you another couple of bases of undrilled archers to make one of the 6 base BG an 8 base BG.

The Continental starter army would work for a WoTR army (however using 'armoured' rather than 'heavy armoured' would seem to imply these should be depicted mainly as retinue billmen and lesser men at arms).

Although the introduction says that each army has a 'ready-to-play starter army', if you look at the lists for each of Hundred Years War English ( Continental ) - (which has the Starter Army), Hundred Years War English ( Britain ) and Wars of the Roses English armies, the Core troops can all match the Starter Army given for the HYWE(C).
There may be a note somewhere which I've missed ... but it looks a safe bet that the Starter Army applies generically to all three e.g. 3BG of MAA and 4 BG of Longbowmen.
Stakes apply to all as does the camp and commanders - well maybe not Henry V - but you see what I mean

Not every army has a starter list simply because of space constraints. For the 100YW English there would not be a lot of difference between the various starter armies anyway as you have surmised so I suspect that may be why the didn't make the cut.
