I know the bit about mtd having to break off...but can foot BG, in particular LF who have been fighting (by passing a test) decide a turn or two after combats to leave/evade/break off/runaway?????

How do you get a BG of MF/HF behind the LF into combat with the LF in the way?

Have I missed this somewhere in the rules or is it not possible for them to leave the combat until they rout?

You can't break off with foot. That you means you need to move the LF back through the MF/HF, and then charge in next turn. You can't charge through the LF either (at least not voluntarily).

and if the LF are fighting anything of substance then it will only be a turn before they are gone anyway, routing or vapourised.

In early play-tests we allowed skirmishers to break off from melee, but the only effect was to slow down the game and to make skirmishers over-effective. Skirmishers should not allow themselves to get into melee with battle troops. If they do they are doomed. Effectively they break off by routing.
