Removing bases after death roll

Just starting with the new set. A battle group engaged in melee to front and rear loses a base during combat. Where do you remove the base from. The question arose when a 4 rank pike BG was so trapped and lost a stand. Do you remove one of the two bases turned to face the rear or what. May leave the Bg with a hollow centre and then again what if it shrinks ? Does the whole thing squeeze up?

Not sure in your example, but I'd generally remove a base from the part of the BG that has received most hits.

Dave is right. If there are an equal number of hits from each BG fighting yours then in most circumstances you get to choose. You then fill in the vacated front rank with an element from a rear rank that is not contributing dice or a PoA (or then a front rank if there are none of those).

You remove the FRONT RANK base fighting against the BG that inflicted the most hits, if both inflicted the same you choose.
You then fill in with any spare bases, but you can't create a split, so in this case you don't fill in.
