The hosts of the International Team Event, which goes back to the 1990s are considering adding a FOGR event.

So the ITC has been ancients (3 different rule sets over the decades).
Each year a nation sends 1-2 teams of 4 players each operating in a different period. Matches are team vs team and overall victory is by team. Usually we have 8-12 teams. Last weekend we have 12 at our event in Rome, Italy. (Previously Grandson, Switzerland; Ghent, Belgium; Lisbon, Portugal have been hosts).

The 2015 won't be until late August-September of next year, but the hosts want to determine interest in adding a FOGR division. We are thinking teams of 3 players. Possibly 2 in the first year we try it.
The teams would have to be by nation. We would allow 2 to 3 teams per nation.

So is there an interest and ability to participate in 2015.

The hosts hope to make the decision to expand to FOGR within a short time.

Getting 2-3 Brit players is probably not an issue. It's whether there are enough players from other countries that will determine this.

Based on those I met and player in Koblenz I got the impression that 6-game events like The Worlds would take precedence, mainly as they don't have that many opponents in-country so playing 6 games is going to be better than playing 4.

That's from a relatively small sample though

This will not happen, until we know 12 nations can reliably send 5 members. That seems optimistic at this point.

Depending on dates I would be interested.

Very - are you getting 12 nations for the ITC currently (as opposed to 12 teams thanks to doubling up)?

Making it a requirement that nations with no known FOGR player provide one to play in the ITC isn't going to help turnout. Several nations that attended in recent years have flat out said they do not know anyone in their nation who "might" be a FOGR player. Given the breadth of that statement and the fact they held to it under questioning suggests it is a flawed idea to make it a requirement that the Ancients and Renaissance events be a team package attendance.

We have repeatedly tried to encourage a FOGR program. We are open to ways to do that. Where the line currently is drawn is we don't want to gut the current program for a theoretical benefit.

We have discussed this a bit again at this years event. Alternate suggestions are welcome. That's why we are moving away from needing 4 per nation.

I could claim ancestral right to play for Switzerland or further back for Italy. I am certain that there are other FOG R players who could claim links to other countries through family links.

This may be a way to get additional teams for any competition.

If its a load of Brits with different hats on playing an event in Rome, that's nice but .....I'm not sure that what the aim is really.

From what I can see, there were just 7 non-UK-based FoGR players in Koblenz. Looking at this forum I'm seeing announcements for maybe 1-2 events in France each year, one in Italy and maybe a couple in the US. there are a couple of guys from Sweden, and a handful from Germany so even if you made it teams of 2 you might still struggle to get to 6 teams, which is the bare minimum needed to make it viable.

I confirm: only 1 FOGR competiton each years in Italy (Faenza in may) but we have players to field 1 team (no more).

Correct.
Although it might be amusing to require the 'load of brits' to all wear hats at the event.

As a suggestion of how this could be done to maximise the attendance of other than UK players:

- You could start with teams of 2 (or perhaps 3) - you don't really need teams of 4 in the early years
- an early period might be good: pre 1570 say. Many ancients players have C15th armies that will be OK for C16th.

Good idea. That is an option if there is interest.

As far as I know there are two annual FOGR tournaments in Spain (Leganés and Úbeda), and a growing base of players. Now, finding players able to play overseas is another matter, and not for lack of interest.
