REFORMING
I am not very clear on this. Could we have a couple more examples of when you would do this? Or when you would not do this….

Page 72 CONFORMING TO ENEMY. I think this basically says line up all combats base to base, edge to edge, all at 90 degrees. When do you NOT do this?

The 2 main situations are:

When you are in contact with 2 enemy BG's which are at different angles.

When you can't physically conform because of other bases or impassible terrain/table edge.
NB you can displace your own bases to allow conforming, but not if they're in contact etc.

If you were charged in front by Cavalry and the flank by LH, but remain steady so that the enemy rallies back.
In your turn you have the option to reform.
If you are a BG of 8 HF Swordsmen you might want to remain facing both so you don't get charged in the flank again.
If you are a BG of 8 MF Bow you might want to reform so all bases shoot at the Cav - the LH is out of range. Alternatively you might want to close with one of them so you can shoot at close range, in which case you have to reform before you move.
Additionally you might wish to remain facing in both directions as you don't yet know which direction you want to move in.

Example 2
Your Legionaries charge a BG of Bow armed Cavalry, and one end of you line steps forward 1.5 MU to contact the end of some knights. You kill the knight, and it can't be replaced, and remain steady so forcing the Cav to rally back. Here if you reform you will move into range of the cavalry, but you aren't close enough to charge it. However if you wait for the cavalry to advance to shoot you then it will be in charge range when you reform.
