Adding units with same model and modding stats

Hey guys,
Is it possible to "add" units in the game but putting in an existing model image of another unit?
For example, in the Thracian Asti group, adding e.g. Thracian spearmen whilst putting in the "Astynomia" image.
Also, another thing:
Is it possible to put different stats in units from different ethnic groups?
E.g. Improving the stats in the Lakedaemonian Astynomia alone and not in every ethnic group whatsoever. Is this possible?
EDIT: I know this forum is sort of.. dead but I'm still hoping I could get some answers here without doing some risky modding and making the game crash. :-S
