I recently purchased the game, and am enjoying it immensely, but decided to try the newest beta version, 1.8.16.

Originally I installed the base game 1.3.3, then installed the two addons I own, Rise of Rome and Legions Triumphant.
Then I patched to 1.8.1.
The game has been running fine and like I said I've been enjoying it.

Though looking at the beta patch notes there are a couple things I wouldn't mind having, such as the replay system, not to mention the game running on Unity for hopefully better performance.
I was curious though why it it's still a beta patch since Dec 2013, and hasn't been pushed live yet (?)

Anyways I downloaded the 1.8.16 from here:

And extracted it, but when I run it I get to the title screen where it says:
'The local client version is too old. Please update the game.'

Any idea why it would say this? Is there a certain version the game has to be on or something, or some procedure I missed?

I think I can answer this. There is currently a re-write of the Field of Glory program to an all new code. This is being done to improve the game and fix certain anomalies in the original program. This has been in the works for some time and has proven more difficult than originally planed. When finished it will be made available, free of charge, to all owners of the original Field of Glory game. The beta files you are asking about are the beta's of this new re-write and are only usable for a limited time and do not work with the original game. A new and possibly final beta is due out at any time now. From what you write your current game is up to date and is still the game every one is using now.

This project is being done by "cothyso" (Dan) and you can thank him when the final re-write is finished. He is doing all of us a great favor and he deserves our patience.
