Sassanid Persians ?

I have just got the rule book and the Rise of Rome army list.
I have an old WAB army that I might rebase for FOG , Sassanid Persians.
I'm going to work off the Parthian list for now ?
Can anyone help me work out what my levy spearmen with bad hats are ? Medium Foot ? So 3 figure/base or 4 ?
Frome the Parthian list they could be Hillmen ?
What book are the Sassanids in and is it out yet/soon ?
thanks

The FoG Sassanid list will be in the Legions Triumphant book so not too long to wait.
Levy spear are either poor, protected, undrilled, heavy foot, defensive spearmen or poor, protected, undrilled, mob.
There are hillmen in the Sassanid list but the chaps with silly hats should really be levy spear. It is up to you if you treat them as heavy foot or mob. You could base six of seven figures on a mob base then use them as either two ranks of heavy foot or one base of mob.

You get the choice of them being either
Heavy Foot, Protected, Undrilled, Poor, Defensive Spearmen (60mm x 20mm - 4 to a base if they will fit, less if they won't)
or
Mob, Protected, Undrilled, Poor (60mm x 40mm - 5 to 8 to a base if they will fit, less if they won't)
8-12 bases per battle group in either case.
The Heavy Foot version aren't too bad, and are useable in the line of battle as long as you don't expect them to take on good quality enemy foot and don't expect them to last too long. The Mob are really just filler to make up the numbers and hide at the back.

Legions Triumphant - due out in June 2008

I recently read many articles about Sassanians in
Slingshot and I just wonder if an option to upgrade this HF to "average" will be fine (i.e. "historic").

We discussed this and decided that it is really pushing the evidence.
We accept that Sassanid infantry was better than it has been portrayed in the past, but let's not get carried away.

What seems odd is that MF Bowmen are average and at the same time HF Spearmen are poor. In fact, I'm convinced that HF Spearmen are not a super mob (i.e. trained peasants with spears vs untrained peasants with improvised weapons), but a completely different kind of infantry. In fact a new infantry missing in the WRG lists.
Anyway, OK, I understand your point of view.

We think that the evidence presented for such infantry (other than dismounted cavalry) is very weak.

Ok thanks for the help guys.
I'm going to rebase my funny hat guys as Heavy Foot, Protected, Undrilled, Poor, Defensive Spearmen
So roughy how many stands of them will I need for an army ?
I'm looking forward to digging them out and seeing how they look. They are all gripping beast figures ,the Catphracts are very chunky.

I doubt you will have too many
The Gripping beast Sassanids are really nice figures, it should make a pretty army.

Hi all
I just counted what I have painted for WAB , they need a bit of touch up , a few spears missing etc.
But it will be a good job to rebase and get them out on the table.
Can we post photos on this forum ?
I have
40x Infantry with bad hats
8 archers
20 Cataphracts (Does fog have a seperate troop type for Clibinari ?)
8 Camels
2 Elephants
18 Horse Archers
So I think I'll have to get a few more infantry and archers ?
Do I have enough Cataphracts ?

In FoG clibinari are cataphract cavalry. Quite effective in their period, but not categorized as Knights as some other rules. THese are more like cavalry than knights in FoG.
I suspect that is plenty.

The poor foot in big 12 base BGs are quite effective. Quantity has a quality all its own. Just don't expect to win for you

Ok thanks
so the foot would be HF , but I don't think I can fit 4 figures on a 60mmx20mm base ?
So I should just use 3 ?
I think I have the same problem with the Cataphracts , the Gripping Beast cav are like hippos , I don't think I can fit 3 on a 60mm base ???
And only 40mm depth might be pushing it as well ?
I have some old glory Cataphracts for my Imperial Romans , they are quite thin and might be persuaded to fit on a 60mm wide base , but my gripping beast ones.. probably no way.

My gripping beats fit. They alternate slightly forward and slightly back as the the riders feet are overlapping.

I managed to fit 3 abreast, but foung I needed to increase the base depth to 60mm to protect the figures.

Hi all
Here is what I have so far , just rebasing now and will need a few more figures to finish them off.
What would you add to the list to bring it up to 650 points ?

Medium foot - mid eastern guys with javs probably 6 bases would do the job
Light foot - archers x 6 - 8 bases
Haven't worked the points but to give the army a bit of flexibility.
