How close to field fortifications do you need to be for your opponents to suffer a shooting POA with bows or shot? Right behind, a couple of inches, 4 inches. Rules just say "behind" which is different from the wording for impact and melee.

HIMO defending FF, so in contact (the same as linear obstacle)

Why are we running a separate topic on this when already covered elsewhere.
By the way since we are on obstacles, the wording is exactly the same as fortifications. Defending for impact and melee but merely BEHIND for shooting. Rules not gut reactions guys.
By the way as I have just pointed out to Hunter in a private mail, to be defending an obstacle or fortification (to gain a benefit in impact and melee) you need to have a base edge in contact. Not you will note a front base edge but rather a flank or even rear edge will do. These troops cannot then be charged in the flank or rear if the charge crosses the fortification. This is done on a base to base basis. Yet again the wording for shooting is behind not defending.
If you think about it there is a very valid reason for this wording but I will leave you to work this out.

Apologies Hunter, just noticed you raised this after I send you a private note outlining my thoughts but before I submitted my detailed rationale.
Pity you had not included my rationale in your note rather than a bland question. Naughty step for you.

Em no. You sent me an email with your concerns. I merely put them out there without any window dressing so folks could contribute without any preconceptions. Thankfully the issue now appears resolved. Bases must be touching the FF to benefit.

Not resolved in my opinion. Kevin has expressed his opinion based on his logic of the situation as he sees it. I value his opinion but it does not tie in with what the rules say. Can I therefore apply other situations to my advantage such as highlanders with bow and swords should get a POA for being supported in enclosed fields. The rules do not give it but Kevin in another post also agreed this was logical to him.

No worries John. I think the position is that it will be up to the umpire at whatever basho it comes up at to rule on on the day based on the individual circumstances. I think that's fair enough. The lads that normally do the umpiring are sensible dudes and if there's a call to be made they invariably go for what makes sense. I am happy with that.
