Guard support rule effect

For some reasons, the support rule for guards was changed and now guards can only be supported by guards .
The side effect is that the guard units of small nations loose ârt of their interest . The saxon do have only one guard infantry unit. So no one can support them except a guard cavalry unit that is also alone and so cannot get support from anyone .
Such units might die quite quickly Under the number of ennemy dice
Italy can have 2 guard infantry unit, but the pro-french spanish army can only have one . They seem a bit isolated with no support .
I would revert to any unit can support guard .

I think I agree with you. I understand why they wanted the change but it makes a single guard unit a bit fragile.

It was designed to hamstring guard CV. I think Guard infantry don't need it.
I think the biggest impact would have been double the loss points for guard losses. So everyone who throws Guard CV in once they are spent it will cost a full point not a 1/2.

My view is rear support for Guard infantry is neither here nor there. If Gd infantry manage to contact with other foot while still fresh, they should comfortably win regardless of rear support (unless the enemy has flank supports and the Guard does not, or perhaps uphill).
Trying to reduce the effectiveness of Guard cavalry is the reason why the rule was introduced. The cheaper versions of Guard cavalry (average drilled in particular) are hugely cost effective - to the extent that fielding these (especially more than one unit of them) has been described as 'cheesy' in our club. Having a single unit of guard cavalry mixed into a cavalry division goes a long way towards guaranteeing cavalry dominance.
Even with the amendments, average drilled Gd LC at 56 points a unit is the best value unit in the game IMO.
A peripheral idea behind the change was also to encourage whole formations of Guard, rather than having a single unit to bolster line formations - which is a more accurate way to portray Guard units for France and Russia at least.
I would not like to see the change removed - unless it was replaced by something else, perhaps an increase in the extra cost for Guard status on cavalry from the current +4 points per base to about +10 points per base.

I understand the reason of the rule . But I think that for guard INFANTRY it is a bit too much .
At Borodino you have a small westphalian corps . 1 guard infantry unit, two infantry units and a cavalry brigade . The guard can support the line infantry but may get no support ...seems highly illogical .
So a change could also be : guard cavalry can only be supported by guard cavalry
Or just a change in points . +10 if you whish
