Googling FOG

Hi all,

It occurs to me that while WAB and DBM are reasonably distinct, "FOG" is not the best search term to use on Google or other internet search engines. As it's obviously too late to change the name of the game to something with a more distinct TLA it might be an idea to get people to put a more unique phrase or acronym on their web pages especially in the meta tags. For example, the Traveller roleplay game community went with the idea of putting TravellerRPG on all their pages to make their sites distinct from all the travel guide pages on the net.

FOGWargame would do it for Field of Glory pages I guess. I've checked and it returns no hits at present.

Just thought I'd mention it. Looking forward to release day and the WF Romans going on sale.

All the best,

Trev

Ahh, memories of trying to come up with a name :?

If you Google "Field of Glory" you get a fairly good set of results. I think that as long as pages refer to Field of Glory rather than FoG we should be fine.

You see? If we had only followed my suggestions for a name, we wouldn't be having these terrible problems!

Now, on a serious note, Hammy is 'spot on' with his advice. It is never a good idea to web tag by acronym, as too many other people will likely be using those same initials for other things. For example, Googling "DBM" brings up site after site on the measurement of power levels in decibels and voltage, as well as a whole host of businesses and organizations using those same initials. In fact, there is nothing at all on the set of DBM wargaming rules in the first thirty search pages (I gave up after that). Searching for "WAB" on it's own was similarly unproductive. On the other hand, Googling "de bellis multitudinis" and "warhammer ancient battles" produced very good results.

So, just remember to tag your site as "Field of Glory," and all should be well in Google land. Adding tags for "wargaming," "historical," "miniatures," and "rules" would be even better.

Cheers,
Scott

Avoid things like "Games" as Surf Control, etc. will then block it thus depriving those at work the benefits of your site :D

Good point ~ I'd never considered that!
