Hi all. I've ordered the rules but as a starter just want to order books for armies I've got. Are Late Romans in the Legions Triumphant book or are they covered by a different book... like Legions Not So Triumphant ?
Thanks,
Steve P

Late Romans are in fact covered in Legions Triumphant.
http://www.slitherine.com/games/fog_legionstriumphant. The book might also have been called Legions Fading Fast, as it goes all the way through the fall of the western Empire with the Foederate list (Patrician Roman to DBM players).
I have to wait for a later volume to get my much-loved Early Byzantine list.

Cheers gents.
And thanks also for the quick trip down memory lane with 'Eternal Flame' . Ahh, a Saturday night at the Irish club in Nottingham back in the late 80's

Are there suggestions for how many elements there should be in a late Legio, or Auxilium? Would they include some archers in a third rank?

At the standard representation of about 250 men per base, BGs in FOG represent more than 1 Auxilia, and can represent up to 2 (or even 3) Late Roman Legios.
Auxilia are in BGs of 4-9 bases, Legionaries in BGs of 6-12 bases. In each case, 1/3 or none can be LF archers.
Late Roman units were often brigaded in pairs e.g. the Joviani and the Herculiani (legions), the Celtae and the Petulantes (auxilia palatina), the Cornuti and the Brachiati (auxilia palatina). So it would be nice to paint each BG as such a pair of historical units.
The shield patterns are shown in the Notitia Dignitatum which can be found on the net.

Thank you, Richard, that's just what I needed to know. For aesthetic reasons I may give all the elements in each BG a similar shield pattern, but the size of the BGs is what I was expecting.

Hiya Simon
Think you may have found something to rival Mr Borg's system for gaming ancients...
I'm just waiting for them to release a fantasy version

Hi Steve,
Yes I'm looking forward to another system so that we can ring the changes a bit from C&C. I love C&C, but if we don't try something different for a bit of variety, soon, I worry we'll go off it. I like the idea of the larger units in FoG; these days anything less than 24 men in a foot unit looks a bit small, to me.
Now a fantasy system would be nice...
