I have just bought a few elements from Hong Kong. They come on a plastic base with tiny (4mm square) magnets that are amazing powerful. Has anybody come across these and knows a source?

Welcome to the world of Neodymium Magnets Bob. You can get loads of these on Ebay . Just search on rare earth magnets.

I recommend the flatter circular ones. If you can match the diameter will a drill bit its just a case of drilling the circle and gluing in the magnet.

I'll give it a couple of week and then we'll talk about the world I realising you have got the polarity wrong on the magnets just after you have glued it on using your uber glue!

... and to avoid said problem...

put a piece of waxed paper between the two magnets that you're sticking together, glue the two sections that you're using together, and once dry pull the magnets apart. chances are some of the glue stuck to the waxed paper, but a sharp blade will clean that up.
