Page 164 says I can use larger than standard depth, but I just wanted to sound out... Bases sizes for my britcon 15mm army. I am planning is foot:40mm x 20mm (upto 30mm depth) and mounted and generals 40mm x 40mm... I think any perceived advantage of the unit being deep (claiming rear support springs to mind) will be countered by extra depth space being needed with turning 90. Also the deeper depth makes it easier to slam into the rear during break off and routs (and we know I'll have few of them)

As I say just wanted to sound out the field before hand. As I say generals will remain official 40x40, as that would be very wrong and unfair...

Nigel, there is no problem with using deeper bases, but the general principle to apply is that you don't gain or lose from having them, so you might need to sometimes work out where things "should" be and move them as if they were standard depth.

That's my opinion too... although I'm not 100% sure but I think it says that no advantage can be gained... it doesn't say anything (I don't think) bout disadvantage, so if your 'extra deep bases' end with you being within 6" of the base edge (for example) then I think it's just bad luck.

Hi Raven: "being too close the back edge" Thats what I think is the reasonable counter. Overall I think it is all balanced. I use 20mm depth for HF in fogam now,,, it works better for the baseing... at club level, no one minds... but britcon can get a little too serious... so as stressed below, im just sounding out... im looking to diorama the bases a little and need a few extra mm's

Nigel, we all need a few extra mm's (except around the waist!). However, as ever, Kevin is right - no advantage OR disadvantage!

Exactly right.

With my Japanese (q.v. in modeling) I'm planning on using 40mm bases because I've got 1/3 of my Samurai horse archers shooting backwards over their shoulder, 1/3 shooting forward, and 1/3 shooting 90 degrees to direction of travel. To do that I've got to have them forward of the pack riding back to the line, across the front, and 'normal'.

The trick (for me) is going to be ensuring that there is a definite 'front' to the bases.

Mine is the zero cav option... I few woko pirate allies in mine... "Forlorn hope troops"... Or is that just my army, mmmmm
