save disabled PS3 great medieval battles

Hi
Hope you can help, just purchased great medieval battles for the PS3 but the game will not save. I have played a number of battles with auto save enabled and disabled but cannot get it to save. Everytime I leave the game it tells me I will lose all unsaved data, but cant get it to save in anyway, I have tried various options in the menus but cannot get it to work. Does anyone know if this is a PS3 problem or is the disc at fault, it was a brand new game.
