Rules Page 40 on interpretations = "if there is insufficient space the non moving uniyts may slide up to base depth backwards or forwards to make space"

Does this apply when assaulting through friendly units? (given the interpenetration is allowed for assaults)

I believe it does. If you still can't fit then you can't assault.
