I've played through both campaigns in Legion Arena and the Britannicus mod and I'm wondering what to try next. From reading here I get the impression that the two candidates are either Cult of Mithras or Spartan. Would anyone like to talk me into either one

I'm wary of CoM because, well, ghosts and stuff don't really do it for me. On the other hand it does seem to be the most obvious follow on. Spartan looks interesting but there seems to be a lot more emphasis on economics and city management and a lot less on tactics and combat. Are those fair descriptions?

I came to LA having previously played Praetorians and I like both. I'd like to find something else in a similar vein. On the other hand it's always good to try something at least slightly different. Any recommendations or warnings?

The Legion series of games that includes Spartan are very much more campaign oriented. Battles are not controlled in the same way as LA, its much more about deploy and rlease, with very limited in battle controls.

The game you're looking for is the Great Btatles of the Middle Ages - but it's not complete yet and we're workign hard on it

I should probably know better than to ask this but I will anyway ... do you have any kind of outlook/guidance as to when that might be available? I don't mean a committed date. Just some idea of when it would be worth checking back.

That is very hard to say right now - some big decisions effect it in major ways but I cant say what they are I'm afraid

LOL, Slitherine's standard answer to questions like that is a variation of idsoft's classic "when it's ready".

Still, all in all, it's the best answer there is, and undeniably honest.

Gwinn, the ghosts and demons in Cult of Mithras didn't really engage me either, but there are some very serious tactical challenges there that push you to play better than in LA or Britannicus. I've found it by far the most difficult of the three LA campaigns. Actually I still haven't finished.

CoM does have a storyline but it too didn't do it for me. I would say that CoM is definitely worth the investment and will keep you going a couple more weeks or months depending on how fast you play. Also, you could always spring for Great Battles of Rome if you are playing on a PC. The extras sound worthwhile if you are planning on replaying the Roman campaign. But since I run a Mac I haven't been able to see it myself.

That's an interesting observation. I like the phrases "serious tactical challenges" and "worth the investment". I'll take another look at it. I was aware that I was (probably) being narrow minded - hence my original question.

As it happens I bought a copy of Spartan on Ebay over the weekend so I suppose I might end up with both. I realise that using Ebay isn't exactly supporting the developers but I rationalised it on the grounds that I'll buy a real copy of Gates of Troy if I take to Spartan.

Of course, the other option that I am tackling right now is a replay of LA. I've picked up a lot of ideas from reading and posting in the forum and I am now replaying LA and testing out some these strategies. One of the most impressive things to me about this game is its replay value.

And I have to say, this forum has attracted some great people. Maybe it is the nature of the game, but these are smart and fun guys, and have put some good thought into how to tackle some of the game's challenges.

A good way to bide time until Great Battles of the Middle Ages.
