trying to play multiplayer for the first time, and me and my friend can't seem to access the host game feature. Any help would be appreciated.

All that should be necessary is for both you and your opponent to connect to the lobby. Then the host player clicks on the other player's name in the user list and clicks "Host". The other player should then get a message telling them the host has invited them to a game, and they need to accept the invite and you'll be connected.

I assume this is what you're doing? Is there an error message of some kind?
