Idea for development process

I dont know if any of you have kept up with the news from the games developer conference a month or 2 ago, but the development costs are expected to be staggering for next gen games. I have been thinking on an idea for a developer to use to help with the process.

My idea is to have modders help with the creation of models/skins for nothing more than credit in the game. Example, hold a contest (providing a mod tool to design with of course) where modders design and draw up the models based on your parameters. As many modders as there are that do this just for a mod, imagine having the chance to be part of the development of the game itself.

I read that there are only 3 members in your team right now, so this idea would likely benefit you more by freeing up a members time for other tasks. There may be other areas where you could hold could use this, but the models/skins seems to be the easiest to implement this.

I figure that if you are restricted by no modding tools for mods, you could ask a select few, trusted modders to try this with. Im sure there is a group of modders who have been with you since your 1st game.

It's a nice idea but there are complications with modding for games that are not yet complete. It means releasing version before the game is ready and creating tools for 3rd parties to use which is quite time consuming. It could end up taking up more time than it saves, as we're more restricted in code time than art and modders can't really helkp with that.
