I'm asking out of sheer curiosity, but what is the point of this option? Does anyone use it and if so why? I'm a bit puzzled considering how few options the game actually has to find there something some cosmetic.

There was an internal disagreement about what was best on the map With the lighter map shading it looked much better and we felt was enough for the average player and screenshots. For the real hardcore the darker tinting means it does not look as good but is clearer who owns what at a glance. No consensus could be found so Johan decided to do both.
