Battlegroup formation: Cavalry Line

The beta rules state that battle groups should normally be in rectangular formation, yet there are various statements in the evade rules and combat modifiers for cavalry being in a single rank. I'm guessing that cavalry should be allowed to form a line (rather than a box formation)? I would also suppose that a line would have a maximum length (say four bases) before moving it requires a complex move test?

Can anyone confirm my logic or explain what I've missed?

A line (at least as far as we consider it) is a rectangular formation 1 deep x wide. The diagrams in the full rules make that completely clear.

No, there is no link between length (bases) and requiring a complex test to wheel. The key criteria for wheels and complex move tests is whether your drilled or not. Generally, undrilled troops have to take a complex move to wheel, although skrimishers and undrilled cavalary are also able to wheel without a test.

From a practical point of view, for various reasons its unusual for troops to be wider than 4 bases anyway.
