Kinked battle lines and independent units

Greetings
Not having played FoG, nor indeed having a copy of the rules, I would be interested to know whether it is a common occurence for battle lines on the table to end up being at an angle e.g. refused/kinked or units operating separately?
Regards

The rule are set up so there are no advantages to having such stange lines. Troops fight at full effect whether they contact slightly or entirely. This removes most of the cheese from such tactics.

Thanks Si - good to hear, that aspect has always put me off some games.

Never liked it either.
You will also find in FOG that 2 skirmishers cannot hold up 16 pike bases (at all).
We started with the principle of removing as much unhistorical cheese at theoutset. So skirmishers ahve to be used as exactly that - harrassment not barricades.

Well, technically a BG of skirmishers
can stop a BL of pikes marching (but the pikes can still move)...

Well call me Mr Picky, but I have checked my rules and I can't see anything in there about march moving, so technically skirmishers CAN stop a BL of pikes since it is a manoever they can't do.
Now if you had said moving at the double then....
Warning: this post contains traces of pedantry

I've got a DBM comp in a few weeks, so I'm trying to get into the swing of things again...
It'll be a hoot when I declare that my LH will evade against my opponent's KnS charge

Quite. I believe I have played one game of DBM at the club in the last 12 months! Remember that you have to roll a dice to see how many things can move. Also remember that skirmishers are invulnerable...
I don't think I am ever going to play another game of DBM, as I haven't bothered to enter for Finland. The only possibilty is Campaign, but I would much prefer to do Field of Glory, but I don't think it is being offered

Sorry to lose you from DBM. I enjoy both DBM and FoG as they are totally different games and enjoyable in different ways. FoG has a very nice feel and interactions and it is especiallly when you are bolluxed on deployment the game isn't over as you can fight your way back far more effectively in FoG than DBM and that is good.

Yes. One thing that I like about FoG is the deployment system. It is hard to get out-deployed by your opponent (certainly much harder than in DBM). On the other hand, it is certainly possible to out-deploy yourself, as I have demonstrated on occasion. The nice thing about that is that with practice--and some mental discipline--one can reduce the instances of its occurrence.

To be honest I am in much the same boat as Dave. I have only played 4 games of DBM since June and have really not missed not playing it. I am sure that I will play more games of FoG this year than I did of DBM last year and apart from Campaign, Helsinki and possibly Lisbon there is no reason for me to play any DBM this year.

Depends what you mean by that do you include DBMM within that statement?
I will play DBMM, although finding opponents is difficult... Really enjoying Flames of War at the moment to be honest, but I had best stop here before I get taken outside and shot for mentioning other gaming systems

Too late, the Slitherine Hit men are on their way and you _know_ they've got your address!

I believe the upper echelons refer to themselves as the "politburo". However if you know this then apparently it is too late....

We don't use hitmen, just highly trained suicide geckos, or for larger payload delivery chameleons.
There have been issues where they forgotten their mission due to distraction by a passing fly, but we're hoping to work the bugs out of the system.
