One thing I am hoping with FOG is that Osprey review what they currently offer on the history of the various armies. Key will be the extent to which they will sell of course. Personally I'd like to see a release/re-release of the Sekunda Seleucid book which I have been after for a while now

But that was Montvert wasn't it, not Osprey?

I remember doing some frantic searches on this ages ago. Sure that it threw up an Osprey, Seleucid and Ptolemaic if I recall correctly. In fact I even e-mailed Osprey about it and the response was 'no plans yet'. That was 2-3 years ago mind. I certainly hope they do one.

The Seleucid and Ptolemaic Reformed Armies, 168-145 BC: v. 1 by Nick Sekunda (Montvert Publications, 1994). That is the only book on the Seleucid army by Sekunda that I could find in WorldCat.

I'm currently trying to build up a full list of books categorised by the various FoG army lists books as part of my website - with links so you can order them from Amazon (UK) - which might be of interest.

Its a work in progress right now, and any suggestions as to books that should be included would be gratefully recieved.

Yep, that's the one. I was certain it had an Osprey number though, perhaps I was confused with another book I was searching for at the time. I do however specifically recall asking Osprey is they had plans to re-issue it so the confusion must have crept in somewhere with this specific title. Anyway, for me, that's where there is a gap and it would be nice to see Osprey (or anyone else for that matter - not bothered WHO I give my money to) fill it.

Few suggestions for the list from my own collection, not exhaustive, but IMHO these books are superb on the periods/theatres they cover:

ROMAN/PUNIC

Goldsworthy - Roman Army at War 100 BC - 200 AD
- Fall of Carthage

Keppie - Making of the Roman Army

Bagnall - The Punic Wars

Montagu - Battles of the Greek and Roman Worlds (may be OOP now - superb for scenarios)

All the WRG books are on my shelf too but most are OOP now I believe. I also have some of the relevant Ospreys. I like Warfare in the Classical World by Warry, good overview


CRUSADES

Meyer - The Crusades (Runciman series is still good but this is now the UK degree level primer for Crusades)

Barber - New Knighthood (tons of dreck on the Templars - this one is very good, I have a lot of the dreck too).

Smail - Crusading Warfare

Marshall - Warfare in the Latin east

Barber - The Teutonic Knights (best on this order IMHO)

Again, the WRG books and also some Ospreys (military orders). Still looking for something doing 1244 and beyond well. Dungeon, Fire and Sword is a cracking read, account of the military activities of the Templars in the Crusades.


Haven't listed every book I have as it would take an age. My only thoughts on such a list is that it's a good idea to keep it to good quality focussed books rather than every book ever written on the Romans etc. Some of which are abysmal. Opinions will differ of course as to which book falls into which category
