Buying veteran core units?

For a lot of prestige wouldn't it be cool to buy vet 2 core forces? I run into this thought every time I face the soviet steam roller...

Do you mean you would like to be able to purchase extra-experienced troops for more prestige?

SOME game similar to PG had this and it was indeed useful - if you pick up unexperienced units late in the campaign (even worse in the DLCs), they are for the most part cannon fodder which die easily and thus have a very hard time gathering experience, even though they're the units that have the catching up to do.
Being able to buy additional "stars" for prestige could be immensely helpful and make sense.
However, I don't think it'll be that easy to implement, so adding this in a patch will probably not be possible - maybe in a sequel, though.

The easiest solution, of course, would be for scenario designers to set the experience level of Axis forces to something other than zero.
(This setting is after all not only used as a default for preplaced units with no experience value defined; it is also used for any brand-new units purchased during the scenario)
Adding half a star for each year of the war, say, and "green" units in 1945 would actually come with 2 1/2 stars (at no extra cost), making them much less of sitting ducks. Of course, the slight inconvenience for the scenario designer would be having to manually assign experience for all those auxilary units...

Isn't this setting ignored during a campaign, though?
If this was changed, yeah, then that's a possibility.

I was thinking of something to use in a mod that i am working on.
Let's suppose this is an axis campaign with Germany in the lead role.
I would preplace a couple of German units each with a certain amount of experience and heroes on the map. I would give them a different flag (for ex. flag of the opponent) and set them passive only. If you wish to "unlock" one of those units, you would have to place an auxiliary plane on top of that particular unit. It would immediately be "unlocked", meaning: the unit switches to your flag, deducts a "reinforcements" fee from your prestige pool, and joins your core immediately. It wouldn't be 100% waterproof, but it is still better than nothing.

You wouldn't need to mess with different flags and you don't need an AI setting, however. Simply use triggered reinforcements. The unit simply doesn't exist until triggered, so no need to "make it passive" before it's triggered/unlocked.
Look at any scenario where you capture enemy equipment for the (easy) scripting required. (In essence, you "unlock" such a unit by a circumstance such as conquering a certain town)

Yes, you are right. Scripted reinforcements are the easiest way to go.

Your idea - to charge the player - is still a good stopgap measure.
Obviously, what the OP wants is the complete freedom to buy a veteran whatever. Still, since "more of the best tank" probably covers a large chunk of the wish-list all by itself

it might ease the pains of having "too much prestige, too little experience"

As there is no possibility to buy veteran units, we can come up with some other ways. There is always a choice to call up reserves or not. A reinforcements trigger should come with a price and/or a probability (in %) they won't arrive

It works in my campaign.
Just set the experience level of the units in the scenario. Then when you buy a unit. it has that experience.

Yes.
(The crucial difference to what really is desired in this thread, however, is that using this method gives you the experience for free. It does, however, solve the basic problem that triggered the thread in the first place - new units being relatively useless in the later war since they're so green)
