AI Military Strength Can Be Misleading

I just played a game where one faction had eclipsed me in military strength. I had three dots they had five. When they attacked, they landed with tons and tons of troopers (armed with flame) only. I had mech era tanks with lasers and I had lots of them. My tanks, aircraft, areal bombardment and nukes (dropping them on stacks in the open) made up for their numbers. I will nuke my own territory if I need to do it. When it was over, I still had three dots and now they have two.
Strength should reflect the type of units and it's arms, not just a number that says faction X's total army strength is X therefore they are the most powerful. Troopers with flame vs, tanks with lasers, no contest.

Yeah this has been discussed many times already and devs mentioned they were thinking of changing the AI behavior by making them privileging refitting old units instead of keeping producing low quality units.
I agree with you tough, diplo military strength should be calculated by adding the strength of each unit and not by adding the number of units.

I agree with both of you, but i think it does factor the strength of the units because once in the beginning of a game, I had a Galeth (it was so early that it was basically my only unit). When it was 10% life I had a "1 dot" military and a few turns later when it healed my military was 4 or 5 (being so early in the game that such a change was a bid deal in the math).
It might consider both the number of units and the power. However, I do not know the exact equation - that is, whether the number of units or the accumulative power carries more weight in the calculation.

Heh, yeah, I had an AI declare war on me because I damaged my Galeth by fighting a hive!
It's probably just the cumulated power. Maybe it should be lowered according to the number of units to reflect that a low number of high strength units are stronger than a high number of low strength ones. Factoring in unit types, weapons and unit modules seems to me to be way too hard.
