Don't getting the feeling

Even if I've the game, and most of the expansions, I never played FOG in deep, every time I begin to play again I found that I do not understand the mechanism, I used to play strategic and tactical WWII games and I'm not catching the feeling there.

I played near all the low-moderate scenarios and I win without understanding those number. For example, in many combats the odds shows and average of 70-80 for the attacker and about a 15% for the defender, but then, the attacker has hundred of casualties for just a few the defender?, and vice versa. Even attacking to the rear I lost a combat with a much major average %.

Just an example: Otterburn
Sir Robert with 191 Heavy armed knights try to charge a Right Wing archers 200
Odds shown 31 vs 42% ??? I thought long bow where good at the distance but not at close combat agains mounted Knights.
After that combat (as I play both sides as human)
The Right Wing archers, now 195, attack the knights, now 159, and the odds are: 25 to 43
So now the knight are less than before but have more possibilities?

I read throughout the help but not finding a " understanding" of the unit's abilities difference.

Any recommendation?

Archers get extra dice on impact when they get charged at into their front two hexes. Also impact combat and melee combat are different things with different modifiers and so are not directly comparable.

To understand the game better, check out the FoG wiki, if you haven't already: http://fog-pc-wiki.wikispaces.com
