Default Hero is not SE, so why give him a Camo Vehicle?

I've just finished the Smolensk '41 scenario and have two heroes Helmut Wirnsberger (Gebirgs in Sd Kfz 250/1) and Heinz Rondorf (Panzer IIC). Wirnsberger's default transport is an SE Sd Kfz 250/1. However, if you convert Wirnsberger from Gebirgsjager to Grenadier, etc, you lose the SE transport and have to re-purchase his transport. If you repurchase his transport, there is no option to select an SE type (ie. camouflaged vehicle). My question is why? Why give him an SE transport but when you upgrade him to another unit type, he loses the camo vehicle? Why give him a camo vehicle in the first place as Wirnsberger is not an SE unit? I tested this out by deploying Wirnsberger on the next scenario map and the core slot was reduced, so he's not SE. It might confuse players as camo vehicles are associated with SE units.

I made the same experience recently trying to upgrade Wirnsberger from Gebirgsjäger to Gebirgsjäger 43, which cost 26 prestige, but off goes his transport. A new (gray) 250/1 will cost another 200 Points! Why? Is this from the category "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"?
No "official" response to jaggy's post, but maybe now?

There is at least 2 more similar heroes in Orel scenario. Both are normal units with se transport. Good thing is they are Gebirgsjäger 43 so you dont have to upgrade.
The only reason to use SE transport that I can think of, is so that those units dont affect the prestige soft cap too much since they will count only as infantry and not as infantry with a 200 prestige transport.

Nice theory aloo, but just checked prior Yakovlevo - 12 to 13 overstrength costs 70 prestige, shall equal 20% of unit price, thus unit costs 350 prestige, which is exactly 153 for the unit and 200 for the transport.
First thing I do with all those heroes - upgrade to the same unit but scrapping the transport in the process. In the later scenarios dlc 43 onward infantry is your only chance to keep soft cap at least somewhat below the 800 treshold (the only other way are SE units so I scrap even experience 400 SE infantry one by one to open slots for tanks).

Thorsten

ThorHa - I think you misunderstood me. I didnt mean that they are free to overstrength, but rather that the transport might not be taken into equation when calculating the soft cap. I was thinking about the same principle that is used for normal SE units - you pay for them their regular price but they do not count towards the prestige soft cap. This would mean that you are fielding a 353prestige unit but its calculated as a 153 prestige unit. This is just guessing as I dont have the time to check it out right now, so I might be wrong.

When I get a special unit with the fast halftrack, I disband the half track. If the unit has a move hero it can walk from then on, otherwise, I will pay for a truck or normal half track. The extra prestige for replacements and overstrength of a 200 prestige half track makes a big difference over a few fights. There was a lot of recent discussion about trucks halftracks and boots if you want to be further enlightened (whether you will be enlightened about transport options or about the contributors is another matter...)
Also, the faster halftracks tend to attract trouble by ending up in front of everything else. If you have to lose a half track when you upgrade the unit and then have to replace it with the same model, you could use the prestige cheat code to refund the prestige with a clear conscience - after all the only change to the half track is the new paint job.

Yeah, if you don't get the prestige back - that's a very expensive paint job.

I freely admit to using cheat codes to reclaim prestige back when trading in a truck because they are always useful. And what army ever had too many trucks? If I ever make it to 45 East that will probably be the only prestige I have left.
