Idle armour speculation for one off project

Question for the FoG:R brains trust.
Am toying around with a possible one off game over the holiday and was thinking of tweaking the advantage armour gives to make it a bit less important. So I was wondering about instead of it being a + PoA for better armour what the effect would be if the mechanism was better armour gave you +1 on the Death Roll.
How do people think that would play out?
Game is one off and scenario so no need to be worried about any affect on points and the like, just how the combat mechanism might work.
Thanks in advance for comments.

Cuirassiers contracting into columns when they got close to the enemy ?

+1 on the death roll unless in a formation that is more that 250% deeper in terms of bases than wide...?

Good one.
Some sort of draconian penalties for being in column when in combat then perhaps, or mandated formations that preclude this.

You would probably want to differentiate between a column being used to benefit from a rule mechanism, and a column occuring during normal play (ie file dropping back to allow a charge)
I'm not sure why you would go into column. Assuming the benefit (+1 dr) would apply in the impact and melee. Sure, in column there would be a reduced chance of a base loss, but wouldn't that be counterbalanced by the options to feed extra bases in an subsequent overlaps.
As it stands there is reason for HA Hrse to go into column. In the impact they are typically level and only get a POA in melee (say in the much maligned HA Hrse VS A DHrs debate). So why don't people go into column now and reduce the dice when they are level, only to expand when they are advantanged.
