Farnborough Shot 2014 - 25mm competition

Time for me to start planning next years Farnborough Shot.
Possible Dates :-
October 5th, 12th or 19th or possibly early September
Scale :- 25mm armies, 650 AP, 40 mm MU
3 Games in one Day.
Venue Elles Hall, Farnborough, Hampshire
Probable Cost £5 with tea and coffee provided/
Theme :-
Has to allow for Russians or Poles somewhere between 1570 and 1700 - as that is what I own
Could just allow it to be open as 25mm competitions are not common
Any thoughts ?

You could make it the early wars of Gustavus Adolphus. That would allow Swedes and Poles.

Open is such a dull choice, however, I suspect that many people who have 25mm armies only have TYW/ECW types (for the obvious reasons) and so if you are to theme you probably need to have something they can at least morph those into without it all looking too silly.

Which could be a useful starting point - but I think you'd want more pike & shot types than just the Swedes.
How about a bit of a "what if" theme based around the (slightly, but not totally, absurd) idea that the TYW actually grew out of the northern wars. So you have the Poles, Russians, Danes, Swedes, Germans and Imperials. Dates chosen will determine what lists are allowed and could run from, say, the start of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth list to 16XX - the XX bit probably being determined by what sort of Swedish army you'd allow because of the Salvo from 1622.

Well Sweden and Poland were at war from about 1611 to 1629 and Poland was at war with Russia in 1618 and also about 1632 (mainly fighting around Smolensk - can't remember when that war ended) so it is not actually a very big stretch. At some point Hapsburgs joined in the Swedish - Poland war. The Swedes and Russians were allies just prior to GA.
There might have been Cossack allies at some point.

Key question is what date out of 5th, 12th and 19th October ?
Realistically we need a 17th C theme to allow a good number of players to compete.

I suggest that you avoid 5th October as that is the same weekend as the Derby Team event.

But what do you mean by a "17th C" theme? I'm guessing it really boils down to having a reasonable number of allowed armies in the comp that players can use their TYW/ECW figures for.

So I guess my Samurai are out.
So just the Poles/Germans or Spanish then.
As for date...Go 19th October.

How about a "Deluge" based theme for a slightly different set of dates?

All,
I've booked the room for 19th October
So 25 mm FOG-R competition at the Elles Hall Farnborough on 19th October
650 AP armies
Pre-set terrain
40 mm MU
6' by 5' tables
3 games during the day - I'll try and allow slightly longer for breaks
£5 a person including tea and coffee.

Are you going for pre-set terrain again Marc?
It worked well last year well apart from that trouble with the tide coming in & out
Themed is fine but TBF if you allow Swedes you'll get Swedes - & lots of em and lots of lookey-likey things purporting to be Swedes (IMHO)
Open worked fine last year and we saw a good variety of different and interesting armies.
Please count me in but do let me know about the 'Themed' idea as if it's TYW I'll stop painting my Aztecs (which is a labour of love anyway!)

Terrain will be pre-set again with a random draw for which table.
Might try a reverse Dunkerque - with the tide coming in rather than going out ...
I'm happy to leave it unthemed. The first Farnborough Shot was unthemed with 4 games at I think 450AP on 6' by 4' tables. I don't think the Swedes took over last year - though we where all Europeans with my army being the farthest East.

For the record - last years result was :-
1st - Ben Jones - 30 YW French 64
2nd Jim Gibson Late Imperial Spanish 59
3rd Pete Dalby 30 YW Swedes 52
4th Tim Porter 30 YW Catholic 50
5th Don Avis Anglo Dutch 45
6th equal Ray Boyles (Late Austrian Hapsburg) and Richard J-c (30 YW German) 44
8th Andrew Unwin Scots Montrose 38
9th equal Tom Elsworth (early Louis XIV) /Mike Shepherd (Early Louis XIV) 32
11th Marc Priest Later Russians 31
12th Mark Fry New Model Army 24
13th Byron Emson 30 YW French 18
14th Alan Brown Scots Covenanter 17
15th Dave Allen 30 YW French 15
16th Nigel Emson Scots Jacobite 10
So only one Swede - managed 3rd (and Pete is a veteran player)
Personally I'd ban 2 ME Dragoons and Commanded Shot as the -1 on shooting death rolls makes them too hard to kill . However I don't reallyplay enough FOG-R to have a sensible opinion.
The Aztecs would be most welcome...

I'll keep paint them then Marc

NB: I would make the point that other than your Russians there was a distinct 'theme' to the armies -

- that's a lot of TYW or 'floppy hat brigade' !

My Russians claimed to be 1645 - so they where right for the floppy hat era (but ours are furrier)
I'm not sure we'd get the numbers if we tried for a theme that excluded muskets and other nasty things

How about 'Defenestration and Deluge' which would cover the popular 30 years War armies as well as the wilder Easterners for those who have them?

Hi, sadly I can not make this comp

19/10/14 due to it being an access weekend for my daughter and the ex being difficult about swapping weekends... But my jacobites will out for Rollcall 2014.
Cheers
Nigel

Just over 6 months to go
Hopefully those of you who got my handout at Challenge will be interested. I'll e-mail those who attended or showed an interest last year in a month or so
