Cohesion test

We had a test game yesterady evening and I wanted to be sure we did it right
A roman elite cohort of 6 bases in 2 ranks was facing some seleucid phalanx and argyraspid roman style unit . The roman were helped during melee by another cohort in overlap . So after initial impact we went to melee . (in context it was a huge melee, two battle line having crashed into one another, phalanx vs cohort )
The cohort inflicted a total of 3 hits only on the phalanx and suffered 4 hits from both seleucid units ( 1 and 3 on the phalanx ) , so we decided it had to test for cohesion as it inflicted in total less hits than it received . But due to the overlap, the phalanx suffered 1 more hit so had also to test as it had inflicted 3 and received 4 .
Did we do it correctly ?
By the way the melee Cohort vs Phalanx was interesting , enjoyable and instructive . Beware the phalanx that looses a 4rth rank and beware the cohort that does have to face a 4 rank phalanx .
