We're doing a bit of research in to other gaming platofrms are interested to hear how many of you guys have a Nintendo DS and if you would be interested in playing games like Commander on your DS.

I for one would be more interested in Linux version.

It´s more "Panzer General II" than CEAW but it have hexes, units, supply, turn-based...what else could you ask for?

Looks good, but does it include wider empire management controls, than just panzer tactics? Air, infantry, naval, resource management?

Nope. It´s highly unlikely you will ever see a game like that in a handheld console...specially the DS (games more children focused than PSP, for example). This is the closer you will ever get to an empire management game.

Except for überfreaks of wargaming like us no one would buy that game. Gaming industry is each day more focused on sales and marketing than on making fun games. Call of duty 1, 2,3, 4, 5...till infinite and beyond! Franchises, franchises and secuels.

Turn based strategy games are almost extinct. Thanks to the effort of companies like Slitherine and Matrix Games still survives...no big budget games but still fun.

Actually 2007 saw more turn based games than 2006, quite a few of them were aimed at an average gamer at that not "dinosaurs" (e.g. Fantasy Wars, Galactic Assault). So the genre is changing, but it is far from extinct. I'm talking solely about PC of course.

Not so, with Firaxis's Spring '08 release of Civilization Revolution for the DS, Xbox 360, and PS3 - Wii to follow in the Fall of '08.

To those thinking once you have Panzer Tactics you don't need another, well if that was the case, why does it seem that there is an endless spiral of games out there other than Commander

There's room for more out there than Panzer Tactics

Plus, there's more to war than WW2.

I want fighting in ancients, napoleonics, civil war and more.

And remember, the DS might be popular with kids, but the DS is also popular with adults too.
And there is more than Panzer Tactics right now too.

Advance Wars Dual Strike, Tank Beat, Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms, Steel Horizon, Age of Empires: Age of Kings, B17 Flying Fortress, Front Mission. As you can see, if you have a DS, you are not stuck with Mario and a Pet simulator

And for more adult non wargamish stuff, you can play football games, golf games, pool games, poker games and boxing games. They have useful games like Brain Age, and Solitaire and Sodoku.

All we don't have, is a LOT of wargames yet.
Now I am not saying Slitherine is going to become "rich" even if they corner the DS wargaming market, but I doubt Ian ever expected to do so Still, Matrix Games seems to be doing well with PC titles, but why let them have all the games

And the nice thing about DS titles, you release it, and then you move on. You don't spend a year trying to make patches to satisfy every convoluted form of computer configuration under the sun. There has to be something nice sounding about that hehe.

Many titles are released today and later on modified by patches. But not to satisfy people but fixing the mistakes done before due poor testing, tight deadlines and such.

Could something be worse that buying a cartidge for DS and discovering that it´s full of bugs and you can´t do anything to fix it? Brrr...i´ll stick with PC´s.

You just have to be wise about your purchases. Don't rush out and buy something upon release, wait for reviews and user feedback. That said, some companies you know are going to release solid games.

From personal experience on a DS Lite (my sons), I bought Age of Kings (AoE title) and have really enjoyed it. Considering it is a 'beer and pretzels' game, I know future titles like CivRev, and hopefully Pocket History: Rome, will provide solid empire management features.

Yes, i read a lot about CEAW before buying it...no one bothered to mention certain AI problems and the lack of correct graphics for all units.

I have "Advance Wars 2"...i enjoyed it first but missions are getting more and more weird each time. Too fantasy for my tastes...

It has been my observation that about 4 out of 10 DS titles are total and complete worthless crap. Then again, some titles have "complete and worthless crap" written all over them in an obvious fashion hehe.

Most don't realize it, but DS cartridges can be downloaded like anything else (yes I know, is nothing sacred). But for the totally paranoid, a person can always test before they buy if they are really that worried.

Although I have yet to see any negatives with the strategy offerings I have bought. Granted, I have seen a couple of games I should have avoided by just thinking it through I "want" to like Tank Beat, but it's more a game for young people and their agile hands that grew up knowing nothing but electronic devices. I'm a board game though, and I need the plodding slow action of Steel Horizon more than the shooter action of say Brothers in Arms.

But from a strictly software speaking perspective, I have not bought a game yet (wargamish offering) that was "buggy". Then again, most of the wargames I have bought in the past, I think most of the patching was about fans being finicky with "realism" issues, and had nothing to do with software stability.

If I bought a DS game, and it wouldn't run at all (like the day one release of Hearts of Iron), it would be back at the store for a refund.

I agree whole heartedly.

If I had Gates of Troy on DS, people would gawk at me because I'd be playing it everywhere I went. Of course, it has to be GoT designed for handhelds.
