Alexandrian Macedonian List Question

Hi,

The beta list allows for "heavy foot with pikes can instead be deployed as [sic] the start of the battle as medium foot with javelins as above" (my italics).

Does the "as above" mean as per the regrade options in the main list under optional troops? And, if so, does this mean that 6 point pikemen become 7 point light spear, swordsmen?

Cheers,

Steve

I asked the umpire at britcon about this, as I was using Alexandrian. His reply was if you want the flexability of deploying the pike as either MF or HF you pay the cost of the more expensive troops. So it's 7 per element of the BG not 6, and you get freebie swap ability.

That would sound like a good anti-cheese ruling and you still get some list-based flexibility.

I wonder whether that will be included in the published form of the list? Hopefully the FOG team will advise

PS - when re-deploying the pike, is it all must be re-deployed if any, or is that some can be re-deployed and others left as pike.

Cheers,

Steve

The list says "This option can only be used if they have been paid for at the points cost of the medium foot."

Not specified as all/none, therefore optional.

Thanks guys :-)

Nik - the beta lists we have don't say that so I presume you are talking about the finished product (which we are all looking forward to).

I am indeed :D

Some of the beta lists are now quite a bit out of date.

Further question on paying the extra points for Pike to be able to redeploy as MF, light spear, swordmen...

When exactly during the setting up of the game is the decision required to be made?

My first though was to treat as per dismounting mounted but this decision obviously has an affect on the total number of BGs, i.e. if a 12 base phalanx becomes 2 BGs and if you had a 12 BG army, then 3-3-3-3 could become 3-4-3-3.

Deciding when it is placed (or revealed from ambush if noted on the ambush marker as deployed as such) seems reasonable but the split into two BGs does make me wonder.

The list notes say they can be so deployed at the start of battle as MF - nothing about changing in the dismounting part of deployment.

The number of BG's is a good question and I suspect could do with a FAQ clarification.

Thanks Nik. I would suggest that they make their choice then after terrain selection but before the start of any deployment which would also allow time to adjust BG deployment distribution accordingly (is that what you meant by start of battle?). Hopefully an author will clarify and maybe add to the FAQ or, as it is unpublished, the actual list.

Hi to the FOG team,

Can I get an official clarification on when exactly the 'start of battle' is with regard to troops like Macedonian foot companions/hypaspists, who have paid the extra point, electing to grab a sword and shorten their pike to a javelin?

Cheers,

Steve

Here is what the list actually says:
 Foot companions and hypaspists listed in a player’s army list as heavy foot pikemen can instead be deployed at the start of the battle as medium foot with javelins – as in the army list below. A battle group of 12 heavy foot bases becomes two battle groups of 6 medium foot bases, a battle group of 8 heavy foot bases becomes a battle group of 8 medium foot bases. This option can only be used if they have been paid for at the points cost of the medium foot.
Clear enough?

To add to Richard's post I think "deployed at the start of the battle" is clearly when troops are put on table - "deploy battle groups" is a stage in the setting up the game sequence.

Ta, from Nik's earlier post I wasn't sure whether it was during deployment or at the very start during initiative dicing etc, but I guess I missed the emphasis on "deployed" and worried about a definition of "start of battle"
