Moving fragmented battlegroups

last a BG of Horse became fragmented infront of artillery. During the JAP a genreral joined them. In the following bound they did a 90 and moved away . and then continued to march... all seemed a bit wierd, but counted find anything in the rules to prevent it.
So can fragmented troops march? (assuming all CMTs are passed etc)
thanks

They can make second and third moves but must adhere to:
"Battle group can make a simple move to retire away from all enemy within 12 MUs but must CMT for any other move"

i thought so.. it just seemed a bit wierd to see a fragged, one base of breaking BG , handbreak turn and zip 15" away to be out of range of all the artillery

Historical accounts, especially of the C17th, involve a lot of units falling back under pressure of one sort or another. In fact far more than you get in FoG:R by quite some way - possibly a case where you need to look at the outcome and not the mechanism to get there
IIRC during development Charles proposed a lot more fall back type moves being available but we didn't go down that route in order that the game had a good chance of a decisive conclusion within "normal" playing times. I think if you were looking at historical verisimilitude you could have BGs fall back on a successful CMT or, perhaps a better version, optionally fall back if they fail a CT instead of dropping a cohesion level (i.e. one or the other).

i can see the wailing and gnashing of teeth as a BG retires out of range rather than drop a COH level !

Sounds Like the FoGN result in which you cannot rout from long range fire alone. It is converted to an automatic fall back/retire move. It's a neat mechanism in which you still make the variable move distance roll, but if you move more than your normal move distance you end turned around.
