Game pace and population growth

I like the idea of having longer games with slower production and research but it doesn't appear to affect population growth. Won't have a chance to test it til later but I'm concerned it could make the game far too difficult at the slower speeds. Or force the player to prioritize the habitat, pollution control and morale techs each game making each game feel the same. Letting your cities morale fall really cripples you in this game and even with normal production/research I frequently find myself racing to get a tech researched and it's improvement built to keep things from falling apart.
