I'm getting "critical error" messages when trying to access the forum sometimes, but no problems at all other times.

Can you post the exact details of the message here by copy & paste so we can try and track it down. Do you ever use another computer to log in, or another browser?

If possible, send me a screenshot of the forum when error occurs, my email address is in memberlist.
