I think it would be better to ask the product key before the first update (that come after the first installation).

As it works actually, the update fail. You have to skip it, start the game, enter the product key then quit the game and launch it again to update it. I think it could be easier if you ask the product key at the end of the setup.

Or maybe add an "update" button inside the game menu

The update didn't fail because the key wasn't added, but most likely because another update was published while you were updating.
