Our group is trying to learn these rules. One thing I am noticing is that there seem to be no limitations to the number of ranks of musket-armed foot troops that can be counted for fire.

Is this true? If not, where in the rules does it restrict it?

Weirdly, it's in "overhead shooting" on P109, 3rd bullet point:

* Other troops shoot only with bases in thh 1st and 2nd ranks. However: (etc)

So that's not a qualifier of just overhead shooting but of all shooting?

Um...to be blunt...that is very poor organization...however, they are still better than a good many other rules sets.

Yes, it does seem odd and I'd have to say there are some organisational issues with the rules, but as you say they are a good set. What I find is that they are an easy set to memorise, but a pain to find things in. So when your question came up it actually took about 15 mins of flipping around until I found it. I knew the answer, but it was a pain to prove it.

Many thanks for your efforts! I knew that I had read the part about only two ranks, but I couldn't find it again, so had no way to prove it to anybody.

This is the result of using the same wording as was in the Ancient/Medieval rules. For archers, of course, 2nd rank shooting really is "Overhead Shooting".

It did not occur to us that this might lead confusion in FOGR owing to most shooting in the FOGR period being by introduction, rather than rear rank shooting overhead like archers do.

Apologies for the confusion. You are the first to point out this issue on the board, as far as I am aware, and I do read all the posts. I guess that those who had previously played the ancient/medieval rules just assumed that the wording meant the same in FOGR, so did not notice the potential confusion.
