"HeroKillsMax" in gamerules.pzdat

I haven't had the case yet, but just for curiosity:
Heroes are awarded by chance. What happens if a unit reaches the number listed under "HeroKillsMax" and hasn't been awarded a hero yet? Does it get that hero automatically or not at all? (for example: Playing the GC you have a "HeroKillsMax" of 300 for the first hero. A given unit hasn't received a hero yet and reaches 300 kills. What will happen?)

My experience is that you will have a very high chance of getting a hero when that unit engages (or is engaged) in combat the next turn.
You will not lose that hero.
I once had a stuka with close to 300 kills and then I got a hero with +ini, I didn't like that since in air vs ground combat initiative plays no role at all, so I cheated by reloading and next turn I got a hero again with some other stats.

I've already fiddled with those settings. Even if you have passed a max-value, you can still receive a hero. Only Rudankort could tell you the formula, but as far as I have observed, it is not a 100% chance after breaching a max-value as long as you don't set all min-max values to 1.

This is a more theoretical problem, for I have never encountered a situation like that. Sooner or later the units got their heroes.
And Rood's example sounds to me, that the likelihood seems to increase the closer you come to the maximum. At least I read it that way...
It would be nice, if Rudankort had time for a little statement.

Getting a hero is equiprobable within the range [HeroKillsMin; HeroKillsMax]. After each combat your probability to get a hero is:
- 0%, if the kills are below HeroKillsMin
- 100%, if the kills are equal or above HeroKillsMax
- KillsInCombat/KillsToMax*100% otherwise
Example:
HeroKillsMax is 100
A unit has 80 kills on it (and 20 still to go till HeroKillsMax)
The unit kills further 5 points in its next combat
Probability to get a hero after this combat is: 5/20*100=25%
