RE-DESIGNED VERSION
Re-designed to harmonize with the new Paraitakene version.
same file name as old. old file needs to be name changed or deleted first.
98 moving BGs, 20 turns.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OLD
The contest for supremacy among Alexander's successors raged on. Two months after clashing indecisively at Paraitakene, Antigonos and Eumenes met again on the field of Gabiene in central Iran.
Designer's notes:
Like Paraitakene, Gabiene was another tactically indecisive battle. Eumenes had superior infantry but inferior cavalry and in game terms, how the players minimize their weak and maximize their strong points will decide the outcome.
I have applied the minimalist approach to this scenario: 58 moving BGs and 12 turns. Again, restrictive terrain was used to channel the action but there are many strategic decisions to be made.
events flow chart:
1. Antigonos massed his heavy cavalry on his right; Eumenes countered by massing his heavy cavalry opposite Antigonos. Unfortunately for Eumenes, his subordinate Peucestas did not intent to fight and withdrew, forcing Eumenes to retreat towards his cavalry on the right, pursued by Antigonos.
2. the combined Eumenid cavalry faced down the mounted forces of Antigonos and his left wing cavalry commander Peithon. Some of Peithon cavalry were sent to attack the rear of Eumenes' infantry.
3. In the centre, Eumenes' infantry, spearheaded by the 'silver shields', smashed Antigonos' infantry, then turned back Peithon's cavalry.
One famous event is not depicted: the taking of Eumenes' camp by a strong raiding party. The forces used by Antigonos in this task are substracted from his order of battle. It was decided that modelling Eumenes' camp would have led to its becoming a focal point of the fighting, which never happened. Moreover this action did not affect the battle, only its aftermath, albeit in a spectacular way.
