I am having all sorts of issues from a cluttered screen... and the mini map is... eh, more often in the way than useful. Absolutely needed though... so in pondering it I had an idea.

A small globe rotating in the same corner that you hover over (or click on) to enlarge. Transparency could be adjustable in settings, but the main idea is to have a smaller map that enlarges, reducing screen clutter.
