First Impressions

First and foremost thanks for the opportunity to become a beta tester. Next my 'first impressions' will biased on the direction that I heavily enjoy and have played and enjoyed the entire civ series. I also enjoy grand strategy games and sandbox-esque games. I've also played almost every space sim and strategy games for the past 15 years =)
Installation went smoothly.
First 5 min my time was spent checking options, setting up the game, reading and following the tips. Which are actually somewhat helpful. Although they might have made me overly paranoid? Suggesting me to just fortify in the city and only go explore if I were very brave
Next 30 min I discovered I was surrouded by fungus and natives, with no where to expand, or so it seemed. I just teched like a maniac and trying to investigation as much of the tech as possible (to not waste time) while staying passive in the game.
I tried to push out a few times, but I found the natives were buffed in strength, which meant I could not safely expand, nor could I up my military without collapsing my economy I felt. I might have build to many buildings.
At the 60 min mark I truely figured out how the mechanics regarding food, growth etc were working. And boy I was doing it wrong! negative morale will just destroy you ! :S So I starved my city down to a 13 sized city and got back on track.. Later in the game I am operating a size 23 city with 2 farmers still - crazy! And not very intuitive from a beginners perspective (Although I like the implications this might bring. Setting up specialised citied in a grand empire just drawing stuff from your empire bank, and you are still having to manage morale locally.). Now I just need to figure out if I were to cautious or had a bad spawn in regards to expansion in my game.
All in all, my so-called testplay became a 4 hour play. just one more turn ...
A bit to early to tell if this can turn out to be a good or great game. But I will keep playing and find out, because boy I am hooked right now. My testplay reminds me of the TV-series Stargate-Atlantis. The whole situation with my single city being beseiged by one AI (who has annihilated everyone els and has cities covering the entire planet) reminds me of the Ancients in Atlantis vs. the Wraiths. I am holding my ground due to clever workshop set up, better tech, and nicely planted fungus in chokepoints. But I figure its a matter of time before they catch up in tech or before the massive onslaught of units will be more than I can handle. But I am not going down without a fight!
Just to note, since it isnt covered:
UI: I like it. It is build with usability in mind, and not just for being for flashy. Also the whole game feels lightweight. Everything is very instantanious. This is something, which really annoys me about Civ5, although its gotten a bit better after their latest expansion.
Cheers!
