Feeding & also Shooting at bases not eligible to fight

Hi All,

We had a situation tonight where a mounted BG was in position to flank charge a foot BG that was in melee combat with a BG to it's front. The mounted BG was almost exactly 90degrees to the facing of the other two BG's - something like this:

8)   8) 8) :?: :?:
8)   8) 8) :?: :?:

8) spacers - ignore them.
 BG with mounted to their flank (6 base P&S)
 BG being beaten up (6 base P&S)
:?: evil mounted with bow.

As you can see there is an offset.

1 - Can you 'expand' to line up with one another. My thinking is that because you have a base that cannot contribute to combat, 'expanding' by taking the overlap over increases the number of dice you have.

2 - can the mounted shoot their bows into the rear rank of the overlapping BG of foot. The front rank is in melee, but the rear rank isn't.

Thanks

1 My recollection in FOGR there is a very specific example of just this that allows the whole BG to slide over. What I don't recall is if you can slide if the front base is in overlap. But the rules are very clear when read

2 Yes

Sliding the whole BG to feed more bases in can only be done if the BG has Front Rank bases that are unable to contribute. This is not the case here. P96/97.

You cannot move the base behind the overlap because of the restriction on p97, 2nd column, 3rd bullet that covers 2nd rank overlap bases of a type that fights with 1 dice per base in the 1st two ranks. This would cause an illegal formation in this case anyway, but the resriction would become relevant if the BG were (for example) all shot.

The evil mounted could not shoot this base because it is "in the 1st or 2nd rank of a file that could contribute any dice (or part of a dice) to a melee this turn". P110. This must be really important because the rule is repeated in the first and second bullet points on p110!

Thanks Kevin. So, what you're telling me is that the Evil Cavalry cheated... again!!!

Just goes to show you... NEVER trust a Cossack.

It also shows that the civilisation of Louis XIV (who won the battle btw) would have had an even MORE resounding victory!

(Just to clarrify - it was a very close game. We gave the French 'victory' but it was so narrow as to not really affect anything. The bow shooting did NOTHING to affect the melee (missed both times) but DID want to get an interp for future reference.)

Good catch I overlooked that.
