Question

Hello. I can now rework a unitpicture in Paint. Than I open it again in Paint.net and can make the background transparent.

It will work in the game, but something is wrong with the schadows. The shadows are ugly light grey and not smooth dark like other shadows in the game.

Who can help me out?

Thanks

Hello phcas!
The shadows should not be a "solid grey" color... They should be made black in color, but that black color should be semi-transparent.
Try to use a better image editing program than Microsoft Paint, for example Paint.Net (it is freeware). Open any standard game icon with the image editing software and take a look at its shadows... Also you can use the"color picker" tool to copy the shadow tone/transparency and then re-draw the shadow on your new unit picture.
I hope this can be helpful to you.
Greetings and have fun!

...Or use the full of functions but very complex program GIMP (free to use). There is a function called Transparency, this is variabel from 0...100% unvisible/visible. Mostly recommended is a value of 40%. You can use your own values what you like...

Greetings!

If you check the guides & tools section, there's a very good unit icon tutorial made by zombiehunter to which I added a section dedicated to shadows.
You can find it here.
