Heroes

I've been having a little success in PanzerCorps and have a couple of issues with the Heroes that are being awarded.
1) It seems that heroes are somewhat "inappropriately" awarded with regard to attack and defense bonuses. Invariably the hero benefit that is rewarded seems just opposite to what it should be. A unit will get a hero when it is attacking that awards a defensive bonus. Then during a defensive action, a hero conferring offensive benefit is awarded. That seems opposite to what should happen. I can see initiative bonuses happening in either circumstance. It would be nice for range benefit to be awarded when a unit is firing at max range and movement benefit when a unit has moved full allowance to engage.
2) Some of my units have gotten multiple heroes. All the award benefits are the same. If it's +1 attack, they both have +1 attack. If they are +3 attack and +3 defense, they all have the same. A little variation and cumulative benefit would make this a little more interesting.

In my experience heroes and their stats are just random. I've had godly combinations (+3 initiative +3 attack +2 defense) and I've had utter poor (+1 spotting on ranged units for example).

I don’t think you will ever get to see such feature that the game memorizes how you handle you units and reward them accordingly. Sure, it would be neat to see such hero rewards reflect the last battle’s outcome where extraordinary results happened. It’s a simple random calculation according to such table in gamerules.pzdat:
Hero1KillsMin 50
Hero1KillsMax 100
Hero2KillsMin 101
Hero2KillsMax 200
Hero3KillsMin 201
Hero3KillsMax 500
After getting enough kills with a unit, there is a random chance added to receive a hero after a battle. No idea how high the chance is, but normally high enough to get one between these ranges.
About 2), I don’t know what you mean. Each hero gets a random bonus from +1 up to +3 in an attribute. Attributes like Initiative are capped to +1.
Usually, I rarely ever get a unit with several heroes who provide the same bonus. Well, I wouldn’t complain if I get 3 times a +3 attack bonus. Can’t remember exactly now, but I think there is a limit how often a single unit can get a +3 or +2 bonus. I recently got a mountain infantry with 2x Movement +1, but can’t remember having ever an artillery unit with several Range bonuses. It is possible though that map designers have applied custom heroes to units with multiple selective bonuses. Additional random heroes could still get whatever other bonus then, but not absolutely sure. This bonus distribution still a bit obscure to me.
What I’d really like to have is total control over which classes get what bonuses. For example, I don’t want to see a Movement bonus on anti-tank and artillery units because I modified some of the towed one to have 0 Movement with the necessity to be moved with truck or tractor.

Ahh. That explains a bit. But I would think that the immediate action could be known (not the entire operational history of the unit).
As for #2 - I think now that maybe the issue is that hovering over any hero shows the total hero benefit.
I kept putting my arrow over the hero icon or picture thinking what I was seeing was the individual hero's benefit. I think now it must be the total benefit of all the heroes...
OK -- silly me.

When in the deployment phase with units in reserve, you can mouse over the hero icons on the r.lower corner of the unit image and it will show the cumulative ones. Then you can hit "alt-n" and rename your unit so you know what it has. For example, I will rename a tank unit "2.PzIV a+2,d+1,sp+1" for a Pz.IV with those heroes. The unit type is not always necessary, but sometimes is handy when scenarios involve amphibious components so you don't have to click a lot to figure out what's in the transport ship.
but I think there is a limit how often a single unit can get a +3 or +2 bonus. I recently got a mountain infantry with 2x Movement +1, but can’t remember having ever an artillery unit with several Range bonuses.
No, it's possible. Each hero is random of the others - I have had a a+8 panzer, and sometimes +2 range artillery. Rare, but it can happen.
I do agree I'd like to see certain heroes that add nothing blocked, like spotting or initiative on artillery and tactical bombers, or movement on all aircraft.
