Newbie with some questions.

Greetings, just a few questions that I am sure you Vets can answer.

1) What are "Core" units?

2) What are "SE" units? Like I got a Gebirgsjaeger inf unit and it has SE on it.

3) Can you see what individual units were killed during the battle, in case you lose a Hero unit?

4) Do medals improve unit capabilities or is that just Heroes that do that?

5) I have the Grand Campaigns but it seems like unit experience is stuck on the 1940 GC as I can't seem to get units to 4 stars, is this correct?

6) Can you download new units?

7) Can you name your units or give them other designations?

Thank you in advance! :)

Hello jblank, welcome to the forums, I'll see if I can give you some quick answers.
1) What are "Core" units?
A 'Core' is the collection of units a player can carry over between scenarios. They are 'your' troops. A scenario allows the deployment of a limited number of units, so-called 'core slots', but your actual core size can be bigger. This can be handy in case you don't want to deploy certain (specialized) units but still want to field the maximum number of troops.
2) What are "SE" units? Like I got a Gebirgsjaeger inf unit and it has SE on it.
SE are elite 'bonus' units, they are randomly awarded to the player. They are added to the core, but can always be deployed independent of the maximum core slots allowed by a scenario, so each SE unit effectively increases the total size of your fighting force. There is a limit as to how many you receive, dependent on your progress in campaigns. Early on only one or two are allowed.
3) Can you see what individual units were killed during the battle, in case you lose a Hero unit?
There is a cheat, called 'reform units', that allows you to review and reform killed units, but normally you don't receive any special information as to what units are lost.
4) Do medals improve unit capabilities or is that just Heroes that do that?
Medals do not improve capabilities as far as I know, Heroes do and don't forget experience; the number of stars a unit has give combat bonuses as well.
5) I have the Grand Campaigns but it seems like unit experience is stuck on the 1940 GC as I can't seem to get units to 4 stars, is this correct?
Yep, there is an experience limit built in for most campaigns, it's usually stated in the first briefing, together with the number of SE units you can receive.
For GC'40 the exp limit is 325.
6) Can you download new units?
Units, campaigns, graphics, there is a lot of modded content available. It depends on what you are looking for, I guess.
7) Can you name your units or give them other designations?
Yes, you can rename your units, select a unit and press Alt + N.

Thank you for that very informative reply. With regards to the SE Units, how are they better than their non-SE counterparts, from a performance standpoint. Also, where might I be able to find some of the downloads for the game? I looked around here on the site and don't see any other than the GC's.

Thanks again!

Lordzimoa is right about reading the FAQ first as it clarify at least some of the questions here. Some of them are so basic tho i am afraid they don't even appear in the FAQ.
1) What are "Core" units?
Core units are the units that you "own". They are sticking with you through the whole campaign. You can recognize them by the golden border around the strength plate. Auxiliary units on the contrary are units giving to you as support for a single scenario. At the end of the scenario they just disappear. You can recognize auxiliary units by the silver border around the strength plate. Later in the Grand Campaign and Allied Corps there will be a special way to keep auxiliary units with you for a while but don't worry about it now.
2) What are "SE" units? Like I got a Gebirgsjaeger inf unit and it has SE on it.
SE units are special units assigned to you. There is a random chance at the begin of each scenario to get one until you reach the limit of allowed SE units. The limit raises the further your progress in the campaign and can be different from campaign to campaign. SE units are slightly better then their normal counterparts, they have 1 more Attack value but their main advantage is that they do not count towards your core size and deployment limit. For example if you are allowed to deploy 20 units in a mission you can deploy 20 of your normal core units and additionally all the SE units you have.
3) Can you see what individual units were killed during the battle, in case you lose a Hero unit?
No i am afraid it is not possible.
4) Do medals improve unit capabilities or is that just Heroes that do that?
No medals do not improve units capabilities they are just flavor.
5) I have the Grand Campaigns but it seems like unit experience is stuck on the 1940 GC as I can't seem to get units to 4 stars, is this correct?
In the GC the amount of experience your units can get is limited in the early years to prevent you accumulating 5 star units to early. There are multiple ways to work with this limit. You can either rotate your units on max exp level into reserve and train up some new units to have replacement ready in case you lose one or use normal replacement on such units and then regain the lost exp back. For details about it just search the forum there are a few topics discussing this in depth.
6) Can you download new units?
Yes you can add new units, modify existing ones and mod the game in multiple ways. It isn't exactly trivial but certainly doable tho. Have a look at the Scenario Design sub-forum here for the moding related questions.
7) Can you name your units or give them other designations?
This on the other hand is really easy. Just target the unit in question and press "ALT + N". Then just enter it's new name.
Thank you in advance! :)

You're welcome! The SE units are usually a little better, they usually have more ammo and a small boost to attack. For example the SE infantry has the Soft Attack 1 point higher than normal, and the SE versions of the tanks have a higher Hard Attack. Most units do not have SE counterparts, only basic infantry or tanks.

There are several official expansions (Afrika Corps and Allied Corps), listed here: http://slitherine.com/pzc_extras Note that all 10 GC's are bundled in the Mega Pack.

As for the mods, you can check out the stickies in the 'scenario design' subforum, there are some threads with links to mods:
